The Iowa Department of Public Health has made changes to the Iowa Immunization law for the start of the 2017-18 school year. The change requires that all students entering 7th grade have both a Meningococcal vaccine and a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whopping cough) booster before school starts in the fall.
All students entering 7th grade must have proof of having both the Meningococcal and the Tdap vaccines before the first day of school, unless the student has a Certificate of Immunization Exemption. There will be no grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement.
The Meningococcal vaccine is also required for students entering 12th grade. Proof of the vaccine or a Certificate of Immunization Exemption is required before the first day of school. There will be no grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement.
Schedule An Appointment:
If you need to schedule a vaccine appointment please call Siouxland District Health at (712) 279-6119 or call your family physician.
In addition, pharmacies at HyVee, Walmart, Walgreens, and Shopko may be able to provide these vaccines. These pharmacies accept most insurance, except medicaid, and require a prescription from your child’s doctor. In most cases, no appointment is necessary. However, if you need assistance getting a physician order, please call the pharmacy in advance and request assistance.
Families unable to get the vaccine prior to August 22 should plan to attend Back to School Night at their child’s school. A nurse will help parents fill out appropriate paperwork and then redirect the parent/child to a middle school hosting a mobile Siouxland Community Health Center vaccine station. The mobile vaccine station will be open 5-8 pm. Siouxland Community Health providers will be able to administer the meningococcal vaccine so that students can get a provisional acceptance into school. The vaccine administration has a $20 fee and requires a parent’s signature of approval. Only cash or check will be accepted. Students that get the meningococcal vaccine on August 22 will still have to show proof of the Tdap vaccine within 60 days.
Students still needing an appointment can call Siouxland District Health to schedule an appointment.
