computer games for learning?
by Layne Henn
Here's a video I found on Edutopia's site regarding how students learn when doing project based learning and technology. This is centered around game design but the engagement is what amazes me! This says a great deal about the arts in education as well math and science. It's a bit long, but worth it! Layne

| 04/08/2009 | Very forward thinking. I already use computer games in my music classroom to teach theory. The kids love it and learn a lot. | karen Bourne bournek@sioux-city.k12.ia.us sioux city schools teacher |
| 04/12/2009 | I think the program is extremely amazing. Kids would have an educational blast with this. | Jolene Jolene51104@yahoo.com Sioux City Reservations |
| 05/22/2009 | I think this would be a good way to keep kids out of trouble and out of gangs. They would be more interested in school. Another reason this would be a good way to learn is teenagers like to play video games. |

| 05/22/2009 | I think it might work for the grade part of school, but not for much else. It might help you learn faster or easier, but you would not be doing as much team work or interaction with other students. It would be like the student is an island and is not learning to be as social as other regular school students would. | Aaron West Middle School Student |
| 05/22/2009 | I think that this school should do something like that because it will be a lot easier to do in class except for lunch and sometimes P.E. If WMS was like that, I'll want to come to school, if this school was like that. |

| 05/22/2009 | I think that the computer games for learning idea is a very good because it would make kids want to be in school and have good grades and other stuff. Many other people would agree on saying that this is an awesome idea |

| 05/22/2009 | I agree with the teachers opinion on the video games at school. But now take this seriously...If the teachers actually got a chance to learn how to play these games they could allow it. I mean if they had fun they would let us have it in school. Which means there would be less phones during class, because they would be busy playing the game. Look at all the technology that we have in the use for games and the teachers are still using whiteboards. Some of the teachers are slowly progressing up. They are using the smart board. But seriously you guys all this technology and no use of it. Watch the video and look at the stuff we could be doing right now, and that's not even the half of it. We could be one of the most advanced schools in some of the states if we used this type of stuff. We could use Virtual reality programs that we the students could be using. But we recommend to lets the teachers try this type of program and learn how to use it. We can have this in our school and this means the students will be listening more and that they wouldn't be using their cell phones. The students would actually like to do their work instead of texting their friends, playing outside, less students in gangs, and more fun at school. |

| 05/22/2009 | In my honest opinion I think this is a great idea. It will definitely boost attendance in schools. What student would not want to go to school and play video games while they learn at the same time. I think only good will come out of this. it is also a good idea because I have met allot of student who don't know allot about computers. In today's world computers are a necessity. I plead to Dr. Gausman and Mr. Henn to take this very seriously and not think about this like a dumb idea. It is not and I am sure this could help thousands of student in there every day lives. P.S Why is the school district still using Internet Explorer? It is not a very secure browser. I suggest Mozilla's Firefox or Google's Chrome. Both are free of charge and secure and faster than Internet Explorer |

| 05/22/2009 | I think having a class like that would be fun. It would be a new way of learning. That's what some people need, is a new way to learn a hard class. Also, since almost everyone loves video games, its something we might have fun with instead of sitting in a classroom all day. |

| 05/22/2009 | I think that students would be more interested if they had to play games to learn. In most of the classes here, I have noticed students just talking and not paying any attention at all. Then they end up failing and have to go to summer school and even there they still might not learn or listen. If we played educational games instead of just listening to teachers talk, most of the students would stop talking about unimportant things and start learning. Also the drop out rate would go down in most of the schools. |

| 05/22/2009 | I think that this video was astonishing. I want to do that same thing at my school. Also my brother wants to make a video game when he grows up. So if we do do that at our school my brother will be the happiest person in school. I can't wait to try it out if I get the chance. |

| 05/22/2009 | I think this way to teach multiple classes is better because, the program will keep most or all students entertained and/or focused on learning inside of school. This is a great program not just for a technology class but for design and core classes like math and science, too. That way it will be easier to keep kids in their school desks instead of on the streets being truant and not getting the education that they will need to survive when they are on own. |

| 05/22/2009 | I like the way you did the computer game it was fun. I wish our school was like that it is was sweet. I want to learn more about science and math the way you guys do it. | Alante W.M.S. student |
| 05/22/2009 | Maybe If school was more like this, kids would do extremely well with school work. Kids, I think, need more 'hands on' work, and not just work like a three page worksheet, due on Monday. Also, kids attendance at school would go up dramatically. |
