Honors English I TAG students create Public Service Announcements
After studying
persuasive techniques, the Honors English I TAG students worked in
groups to create a Public Service Announcement or an advertisement
for a “product” that demonstrated their understanding of how
persuasive techniques and elements were used to effectively
communicate messages. Using Movie Maker, video found on YouTube,
images and media the students filmed/created, combined with their
knowledge of persuasion, students produced the ads.
Some of their
reflections included:
“This
project has made me a lot more interested in PSA’s and has taught
me a lot about how seemingly subtle a fairly obvious persuasive
technique can be.” Neil V.
“Whenever I see ads on TV, I think more about them. I think about
the persuasive appeals that they are using. I note the sounds and
images that they use. I think I’m more interested in persuasion
now.” Giang L
“I have learned quite a bit. Not only about the persuasive
techniques and appeals used in commercials but about child abuse
itself. Statistics are sometimes some of the most fearsome things
we will ever read. Besides that fact, I have put myself in a
producers shoe and gone through what they might have to in order to
get an effective commercial out there.” Chebrai J.
“We considered how the viewer that we’re trying to persuade will
think of our PSA and the emotions they will feel at every moment
while viewing. When creating something so short, you have to
consider every second.” Lauren R.
“I also learned how to choose colors, music, and mood to provoke
emotion in an ad. Finally, I think I learned the important skill of
presenting my beliefs.” Daniel P.
