District Selected for a New Program through the FCC’s E-Rate
Only 20 Districts Selected Nationwide
The Sioux City Community School District learned on March 9 that they were one of 20 selected nationwide for the Federal Communications Commission's Learning-On-The-Go wireless pilot program. The District will receive roughly $1.1 million a year for three years to provide every District sophomore, junior and senior student Internet access through new netbook computers. This allows the District to extend the time and place of the classroom to virtually anytime and anywhere when coupled with offsite wireless access.
According to Neil Schroeder, technology director for the Sioux City Community School District, this program truly sets Sioux City apart from other districts. "While many districts have started doing 1-to-1 laptop initiatives, ours will be truly compelling in that we completely eliminate the digital divide by ensuring every student always has connectivity. You won’t find this anywhere else." The District will roll out the netbooks in the fall of 2011.
