ESL/Migrant Program
The Sioux City Community School District continues to serve a growing population of English Language Learners (ELL) in grades K-12. Approximately 89 percent of the ELL students served in the district are Spanish speaking. Other languages served include, but are not limited to Vietnamese, Lao/Hmong, and Khmer.
The ESL/Migrant Program in the Sioux City Community Schools serves approximately 2200 ELL students in 25 schools at any given time. The ELL students can be served in a variety of programs depending upon their English language proficiency.
In addition to ESL-endorsed teachers, the program also provides ESL tutors to help support the instruction in the classroom. The ESL Office located at Central Campus provides school/family liaison support throughout the district. Other services provided by the ESL office include interpreting at Parent/Teacher conferences and translating information to families in their native language, helping parents fill out forms, providing information on programs that may be of interest to families such as Head Start, second language classes for adults, Beyond the Bell, and summer school programs, just to name a few.
Students are eligible to receive a variety of services based on their individual needs. Some of these services include English Language Development Classes, Sheltered English Instruction in the Content Areas, Two-Way Immersion/Dual Language Classes, just to name a few.
