District Library Department Under New Leadership

The library department will be under new leadership this fall. Kathy Bottaro will take over as head teacher librarian and will coordinate the efforts of all library staff throughout the district. Kathy has been an elementary teacher; she has worked in the children’s department of the Sioux City Public Library; and she has been an elementary librarian with the district for the past two years.

As head teacher librarian, Kathy will provide leadership and support to teachers, principals, and central office staff as it pertains to all areas of library services. She will organize and direct professional development activities for library staff, develop and oversee the library department’s budget, lead the department in the development of an information literacy curriculum, administer the new library management system, and coordinate the selection and maintenance of all library materials and equipment.

Kathy’s support team will include Robbi Codina, her administrative assistant, eight certified librarians, and thirty-one support staff. Robbi, who works in the central office, is primarily responsible for all data entry into the online catalog, and she provides phone support to staff out in building libraries. A certified librarian serves each high school and middle school, and two traveling librarians serve the nineteen elementary buildings. Finally, some libraries are supported by a few secretaries and the rest by library assistants.

Kathy looks forward to the new challenge and will work hard to lead the department in a time of information overload and ever-changing technologies.
