    Journal Goodfellow Charities distributes toys and books to Siouxland families in need every Christmas season. Families who apply will receive two toys and one book for each child, aged 0-12. Parents or guardians can apply in person at the Sioux City Journal offices, or by filling out a form which can be found inside the Sioux City Journal, The Weekender publication, or in the Siouxland Shoppers Guide. To apply in person, stop in at 515 Pavonia St. in Sioux City between 8am and 5pm.

    Back to School – the Library is Here to Help with Free On-demand Tutoring from Brainfuse

    The Library is here to help learners of all ages as they head back to school this year. In addition to the thousands of materials you can find on ANY subject at our three Library locations, there is help right at your fingertips with e-resources from Sioux City Public Library, and it’s all FREE with your Library Card!

    Stuck on a problem and don’t know the answer? Brainfuse HelpNow is an app that provides learners from kindergarten to college access to live tutoring and homework help.
    Brainfuse tutors are live on-demand anywhere you have an internet connection. Snap-n-send a photo to a tutor for help, get writing advice and critiques, or schedule a tutoring session to help with your overall knowledge of a specific subject. Tutoring and homework help services are available in Spanish for all subjects offered in English. Brainfuse also offers standardized test prep for a variety of tests including ACT, the new SAT, TASC, the new GED, ASVAB, TOEIC, the US Citizenship Test and others.

    Volunteers at STARS find that helping with our therapeutic riding program is beneficial not only to our riders but for themselves as well. Learn about horses and how our program helps individuals with disabilities.

    Stars in needing volunteers to help with our therapeutic riding program! No horse experience is necessary, we will teach you everything you need to know. Volunteers must be age 14 and up.

    Are you a caregiver of a child with special health and behavioral needs looking for some educational tools to help you in your caregiving role?

    “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” is an educational series presented by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach that is designed to provide you with the tools to take care of yourself while caring for any age child with special health or behavioral needs.

    Two experienced class leaders conduct the classes and provide interactive lessons, discussions, and brainstorming to help family caregivers take the tools presented and place them in action.

    Participants will receive “The Caregiver Helpbook” developed specifically for the class that covers topics such as hiring in‐home help, understanding community resources, making legal and financial decisions, and understanding depression.

    “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” will give you the tools to:• Help you reduce stress

    • Communicate effectively with other family members, your doctor, and paid help
    • Take care of yourself
    • Reduce guilt, anger, and depression
    • Help you relax
    • Make tough decisions
    • Set goals and problem‐solve

    Pre‐registration for “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” is required. Foster parent credit is available.
