The Free Summer Meals program is back!

The Sioux City Community School District is once again participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Beginning June 4, 2018 thru July 27, 2018, meals are available Monday -Friday for all children ages 1-18 years without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Our new mobile food bus will also be making the rounds June 4 – July 27. Stop by the Leeds Splash Pad from 10:45-11:30 or the Children’s Museum between 12:00-12:45 for food on the fly!

Perry Creek making huge gains with Specially Designed Instruction

If you could harness the energy being expended in a Perry Creek Elementary conference room lately, you could probably light up the whole school. Heck, you probably could light all the schools in the Sioux City Community School District. This team is energized with a capital “E.” It’s not their work with Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) that has ignited their passion, per se. Rather, it’s the success they are experiencing from it that has not only raised their hopes, but their expectations. “I think special education used to be viewed as glorified tutors,” said Mary Duax, a special education teacher since 1990. “Students came to the resource room to get help with what they were doing in the regular classroom. Today it is meant to supplement what they are doing in the core. We are teaming with the general education teachers. The data shows that scores are going up, up, up, and students are exiting special education.”
