Schools bring new model of youth football to 2019 season

After widespread conversations with local football coaches and youth directors, the following schools: Heelan Catholic, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Sioux City East, and Sioux City West, have decided to transition to a new model of youth football for the upcoming 2019 football season.  Incoming third graders will now participate in padded flag football instead of full contact tackle football.  This transition takes place after feedback from parents, head football coaches, and youth directors.

This model will:

  • Allow more players to experience playing multi-positions on both offense and defense
  • Allow for smaller teams and more playing time
  • Create healthier player-to-player matchups
  • Use smaller competitive fields geared toward development
  • Teach rules that will emphasize the fun of the game and focus less on tackling at an early age

The previously listed schools are excited for the upcoming changes and welcome a new development approach to the game of football.
