East High School Speech and Debate Team Dazzles at National Tournament

Vanderloo, Braunstein NSDA Nationals June2021final1

The East High School speech and debate team made school history during the National Speech and Debate Tournament this month, being named among the top students nationally.

Five students competed in this year’s national competition including:

  • Caleb Baker (Poetry)
  • Ella Berkenpas (Prose and Storytelling)
  • Max Braunstein (Duo and Prose)
  • Jacob Mace (Dramatic Interpretation and Prose)
  • Carter Vanderloo (Duo and Prose)

Braunstein and Vanderloo placed seventh in the nation in asynchronous split screen duo, the highest achievement for students in East High School speech and debate team’s history. In addition, Braunstein placed in the top 120 nationally in prose.

The National Speech and Debate Tournament is highly competitive. Students need to place in the top two statewide at a national qualifier competition in February to qualify for the national tournament. Only 6,700 students nationally qualified for this year’s tournament out of 140,000 National Speech and Debate Association student members, making East High School’s national showing even more impressive.

The National Speech and Debate Tournament is the world’s largest academic competition, providing the best students nationally a platform to debate current events, voice their views, and share their stories.
