Career Academy student, local business celebrate successful internship
Sioux City, Iowa – While Lucky loves experimenting with computers, he knows a career in computer science is not in his future.
“In high school, I took computer science courses through the Sioux City Career Academy, followed by courses in the accounting pathway. Though I love working on computers as a hobby, the accounting pathway through the Career Academy hooked me in as a career,” says Lucky, a North High School senior.
In September, Lucky began an accounting internship at Mosaic Business Services in Sergeant Bluff. While he has enjoyed the people and perks of working at Mosaic, Lucky says the best part is that he has learned valuable insight into the accounting field.
“I tried other pathways in the Career Academy before finding a career path that I really enjoy. The only way for me to do this was through a pathway system like the Career Academy offers. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had any other way of finding what I enjoy,” says Lucky.
Lucky’s experience would not have been possible without the help of local organizations like Mosaic Business Services who partnered with the Career Academy at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.
“It’s extremely important for us to develop and maintain a strong partnership with the school district and its students. The Career Academy’s work-based learning program provides companies like ours with a pipeline for new and qualified hires,” says Dillon Hiserote with Mosaic Business Services.
Additionally, internships like the one with Lucky have provided Mosaic with valuable mentorship opportunities adds Dillon.
“Our Career Academy interns provide our company with a fresh new perspective on projects, a more motivated and dynamic work environment, and meaningful mentorship opportunities for our employees. It has really allowed our staff to be more positively engaged in their work while mentoring students. We would definitely recommend other businesses in the community accept student interns.”
