Return-to-Learn & COVID-19

Committed to Keeping Students and Staff Safe

The Three Learning Models

Within the District’s Return-to-Learn Plan, there are three different learning models. We are making plans and preparations for all three and will move from one to another if conditions related to COVID-19 change within the state, community, or school buildings.

On-Site Learning

Return to Learn Graphic In SchoolWe can welcome back all students into our buildings and resume a mostly normal school day schedule. This would involve enhanced cleaning protocols, a degree of physical distancing among students, adjustments to how students enter and exit buildings, the use of masks or shields, and changes to how we manage transitions between classrooms throughout the day.

Hybrid Learning

Return to Learn Graphic HybridDuring hybrid learning, students will receive 50% of their traditional instruction through on-site learning. Therefore, students will only attend school on-site for a portion of the week. When students are not attending school on-site, they will be completing the required coursework at home.

Virtual Learning

Return to Learn Graphic VirtualVirtual Learning is online instruction. This is a model that parents can voluntarily elect to enroll a student in full-time. Additionally, Virtual Learning is a model that may be employed if the District needs to close a building or the entire District in response to COVID-19 spread. Any student engaged in Virtual Learning will have required coursework.

SCCSD Return-to-Learn Plan

District leaders have developed the Return-to-Learn Plan for the 2020-2021 school year for the Sioux City Community School District. The plan includes feedback from all stakeholder audiences, including parents.

The Return-to-Learn Plan was approved by the Iowa Department of Education before the start of the school year. Since the school year began, the plan has evolved to incorporate new practices developed in response to current circumstances and experiences. We continue to evolve and improve as we all work together to continue educating students through this pandemic. For details related to the most recent updates, please click here.
