Bright Futures

Ms. Jen Gomez shared an informational presentation about the history and the purpose of the Bright Futures program. Bright Futures was created in Joplin, Missouri, when a superintendent was looking to improve graduation rates. He discovered many students’ basic needs were not being met and that many teachers were using their own funds to assist students in meeting those needs. He created a platform where the district could collaborate with existing community agencies to acquire resources to meet students’ needs and called it Bright Futures.

In 2015, the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce contacted Dr. Paul Gausman with interest to start a
Bright Futures affiliate. The District began the process of communicating with community agencies, assessing the needs of students, and establishing a social media presence. A kickoff event was held in October of 2015 to officially begin the Bright Futures Sioux City affiliate program.

The program involves a collaborative effort between businesses and individuals who donate items that families cannot acquire or may have lost in an extenuating circumstance. These items include clothes, any household items, school supplies, and hygiene items. Adults and students donate their time assisting with sorting, delivering, and packing items to be delivered to families in need. The District does not incur costs to have an affiliate program as all time is volunteer and items are either donated or purchased with donated funds.

An advisory board involving several community agencies meets on a regular basis for the Bright
Futures Sioux City program. Community agencies may be a business, human service agency, faith-based agency, parent group, or an individual. If interested in becoming involved in Bright Futures, please contact Jen Gomez at 712-279-6075.
