Educational Equity Committee Meeting Minutes – October 16, 2020

The Educational Equity Committee met on Friday, October 16, 2020 at the ESC Room 105.

Committee Members Present: Bernie Hess, Jason Jackson, Karen Mackey, Shana Michalski, Tito Parker, Stephan Pearson, and Joe Riker.

District Employees and School Board Directors Present: Stephanie Alcaraz, Dr. Kim Buryanek, Lori Gentry, Dr. Jen Gomez, Lashawna Moyle, Amber Sackmann, and Dulce Sanchez.

Guests: Dr. Rita Vannatta and Stefanie Verros.

School Calendars

Dr. Vannatta and Stephanie reviewed the school calendars for the upcoming three years. Dr. Vannatta asked the committee for feedback regarding the dates and important events.

This year, one of the major changes to the school calendar was Parent-Teacher Conferences at all grade levels are now held on the same day.

Benefits of having conferences on the same day include:

  • Parents have less travel time.
  • Parents have the option to have conferences over the phone or virtually.
  • Better meeting parent and student needs.

Other mentioned topics include:

  • The importance of having every student registered before or on Count Day.
  • Winter Break being shorter.
  • Snow days could possibly become Virtual Days instead due to the pandemic.

For the school calendar, the upcoming next three years look very similar. Dr Vannatta and Stephanie will present the school calendars to the School Board at the November 23, 2020 School Board meeting.

The Educational Equity Committee continued to review the behavior data, which is disaggregated by gender and race/ethnicity.

The Educational Equity Committee used an Examining Data Protocol, which included identifying patterns/trends, surprising/unexpected data, positive and concerning data points, and questions.
