Educational Equity Committee Meeting Minutes – January 14, 2022

The Educational Equity Committee met on Friday, January 14, 2022, at the ESC Room 102.

Committee Members Present: Tito Parker, Karen Mackey, Norma Azpeitia, Rhonda McGarry, Jacob Harlan, June Mikkelson, Laura Mesz, Sherry Martin, and Kristine Bata.

District Employees and School Board Directors Present: Dr. Dora Jung, Joe Riker, Amber Sackmann, Perla Alarcon-Flory, Monique Scarlett, Dr. Juline Albert, and Lizzy Díaz.

Visitor: Eric Kilburn

HR Recruiting Efforts

Leslie Heying introduced herself as the Director of Communications for the Sioux City Community School District. She presented the HR Recruitment Marketing Campaign to the committee. Mrs. Heying reviewed different marketing strategies that the District is using. She explained that these strategies were developed in collaboration with the Human Resources Department. Mrs. Heying went over the different steps the District has taken to recruit from specific colleges and universities. She explained that these steps focus on hiring teachers with a diverse background. These steps include digital and traditional advertising.

PBIS – Positive Behavior Intervention System

Dr. Jung explained what PBIS is and how it is used proactively for students to have positive behavior. The District has provided instructional videos that are used in different languages to promote positive behavior.

District/Board Committees

The Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the committee asked Dr. Jung to send information to the Educational Equity Committee on the District/Board Committees and Board Committee Assignments.

Roundtable Items/ Upcoming Dates and Events

Vice Chairperson Karen Mackey informed the committee of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, Monday January 17, 2022, at 7pm at Kingdom Ministries.
