Students at the Sioux City Career Academy

The Sioux City Community School District provides internship opportunities in many fields to area students and the Sioux City Schools Career Academy is making sure its students are prepared to get those positions.

Employees of Great West Casualty’s Human Resource Dept. spoke to students in the academy about expectations in the workplace on Monday morning, Jan. 17th.

The students in the Bootcamp are all prepared to have an internship this semester.

Last semester 75 students were placed in internships.

The Career Academy is hoping to increase that number this semester to at least 100 students.

“Find something you’re interested in and see if there is an opportunity for an internship in that. Mr. Gaul and Mrs. Coughlin have been really good at working with all types of students and finding them an internship in those practices,” Makenna Schlumbaum, a senior at West High School said.

Schlumbaum just finished an internship with MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center on the rehab floor, working with nurses and meeting people all over the hospital.

She also has another medical internship set up for the upcoming semester with UnityPoint Health – Saint Luke’s, in the surgical unit.

Schlumbaum says these internships help her figure out what job she wants to work toward before heading to college.

Getting the interview for an internship is the first step to a thriving career and helps spark interest in a new area.

The district is looking to expand its business partnerships, allowing students to dive into different careers during their high school experience.
