Bridging Healthcare and Education

School nurses serve a pivotal role that bridges health care and education so students are safe, healthy, and ready to learn.  

SCCSD school nurses bridge health care and education by: 

  • Assessing and evaluating the health needs of students and school staff 

  • Providing health education and counseling 

  • Developing individual and emergency health care plans 

  • Providing staff training for health services 

  • Following direct specialized health care procedures 

  • Providing first aid 

  • Implementing and monitoring student compliance with state immunization requirements  

  • Providing vision screenings 

  • Serving as a community resource liaison  

  • Processing medical billing 

  • Providing school staff support  

School nurses are a specialty branch of professional nursing. Sioux City Community School nursing services are delivered by eight Professional Registered Nurses licensed by the Iowa Board of Nursing.
