Students in Sioux City North High School’s culinary pathway program held a food truck competition Tuesday, March 15th.

The students had to put together a mock menu, business plan and a cost analysis for their businesses.

They then brought a piece of their food trucks to life, by serving North High School teachers their truck’s main dish.

The teachers could then vote on their favorite overall food trucks.

“It’s a great space to try new things. So you can experiment with what works well together and what doesn’t,” said North High School sophomore Adam Emerock, “Just the experience of getting hands-on, getting to cook and getting to learn, it was a lot of tough work, but it gives you a sense of what working in a truck would be like.”

On top of honing the students’ culinary skills, this project helped to educate them on the business side of running a kitchen.

“It’s important for them to know how much money is put in to run a restaurant and a business,” said North High School’s ProStart instructor Kelsey Miller. “We’ve brought in a lot of what was in their curriculum already and just built the food truck project around it.”

Most of the students involved in the program plan to continue their culinary education after high school.
