Elective Student Transportation

Code Number: 709.6

The Board will provide the option of transporting students who live under two miles (three miles for high school students) from their school attendance center, when the following conditions have been met:

  • An appropriate monthly fee is paid in advance.

  • A written request for paid transportation has been submitted to the District’s Transportation Office.

  • The student intends to ride regularly.

  • An appropriate seat is available on an existing route.

  • Available equipment can be used after (or in conjunction with) meeting the requirements of transporting students who live beyond two miles (three miles for high school students) as is required by law.

The fee for such service will be determined the spring prior to each school year, and shall reflect as closely as possible the actual costs for providing such elective service. The fee, once established, will be uniform across the District and for all attendance areas.

Where the equipment or requirements preclude transporting all petitioners, the following eligibility criteria shall be used to determine where service may be provided:

  • Greater numbers of students clustered together may be given preference over lesser numbers.

  • Students living on opposite sides of heavily trafficked roadways or other impediments may be given preference over those with more natural “safe” walking routes.

  • Students who do not require extensive detours from straight-forward routings may be given preference (which may, in other words, require some walking to “collection points”).

  • Students living farther rather than closer may be given preference, all other things being relatively equal.

  • Younger students may be given preference over older students, all other things being relatively equal.

Students who are entitled to free or reduced price meals are also entitled to free or reduced fees for busing provided there is space available.

Parents/guardians shall be notified in a timely manner of the possible options and shall be given time to make applications. The District shall then inform parents whether or not their application has been approved or denied.
